SIMOVERT ML2 is the second generation of SIMOVERT ML. It is used in slow to fast high-power applications with high torque levels in which energy recovery and a high dynamic
response are required. The SIMOVERT ML2 is based on a water-cooled three-level power inverter using IGCT technology (Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor) withvoltage-source DC
link and active front end (AFE).In addition to closed-loop motor control, the SIMOVERT ML2 can function as a reactive power compensator on the line side, in order to compensate
for other reactive power loads or to improve the power factor of the overall system. A DC bus is shared by several drives, enabling direct power exchange in generator and motor
applications.
The standard SIMOVERT ML2 series covers the power range from approximately 5 to 18 MVA with an overload capability of 175 % (the power rating to be defined depends on the
required load cycle). The short-term maximum power specifications for the key types are 10.5, 20 and 30 MVA.
The power sections are used in Transrapid and in static railroad networks and power grid interconnection sys-tems. High reliability, excellent compatibility with delivery
system and motor and ease of integration of techno-logical application controls are their key characteristics.
Steel industry:
Applications in the steel industry include hot roll production lines, thin-slab caster and rolling mills, cold tandem mills and cold band winders/unwinders. Over a period of more
than 8 years, about 70 drives equipped with the earlier product version SIMOVERT ML have been supplied to rolling mills. Even before the product had been generally released for
sale, orders for about 30 drives equipped with SIMOVERT ML2 had been received. A back-to-back test with 2 rolling-mill motors was carried out at the Berlin factory in early 2004.
Installation of first plant with 5 drives: Summer 2004.
Mining:
In the mining industry, the SIMOVERT ML2 is used for in-pit conveyor systems. Voltage source technology is increasing in popularity in this industry, as compared with cycloconverter
technology.
Railway and network applications:
The power sections of the SIMOVERT ML2 system are used in Transrapid transportation projects for the power delivery to the maglev track. The Emsland test facility is being
equipped with the new IGCT technology, while the Shanghai - airport line and numerous coupling installations for railway networks use the technology of the predecessor product.
Technical features:
- Power range from 5 to 28 MVA (depending on required overload capability and converter type)
- Delivery voltage 3.3 kV
- Power section with water cooling
- Standard large drive comprising several transport units which can be installed separately. Power sections and excitation can be located 50 m cable length away from the control
system. Power sections on the same DC bus must be installed side-by-side.
- The rear side must be kept free for service access
- Power cables are connected from below, but can be connected from above (optional)
- Ungrounded circuit-breakers optionally with insu-lation monitoring devices for ungrounded power system
- Optional integrated grounding switch
- IP23 degree of protection Optional increase of degree of protection to IP43 through filter mats
- Phase modules can be completely replaced with hoisting tool
- Serial fiber-optic ring communication with closed-loop control system Fiber-optic connection to further power sections on the DC bus
Closed-loop control of the basic unit:
- Tried and tested, 32-bit multiprocessor system (SIMADYN D) for the basic closed-loop control
- Transvector control for synchronous machine
- Speed control range down to zero speed, maximum frequency up to 80 Hz
- Large field-weakening range if required (constant output, up to 1:4)
- Standard equipment reaction (control words, status words, ON/OFF process, error classes)
- Basic control can be parameterized in MS-EXCEL parameter table
- Hardware, interfaces and operator panel optional for application control (SIMATIC TDC with OP17)
- Setpoint/actual value interface between application and basic controls: PROFIBUS
- Optional operator panel OP170B (OP2N) for basic control in the frontdoor (necessary for types without application control).
- Equipment documentation incl. software and parameter tool on CD-ROM
- Comprehensive protection and diagnosis strategy for maintaining maximum possible availability
- IP21 degree of protection
- Coupling relay for interface to circuit-breakers
- Double socket with separate 230 V infeed
- Red cabinet error signaling lamp with external 24 V delivery
- Cabinet with doors to front, detachable rear and side panels
Hardware of the application technology control:
- Hardware is available for the application technology controls and the control and monitoring systems of other plant auxiliaries. This hardware is based on the high-end automation
system SIMATIC TDC (with GDM or Profibus interface) with the OP17 operator panel.
- Setpoint/actual value interface between application control and higher-level plant process control: PROFIBUS or GDM (Global Data Memory).
- The hardware is supplied with basic software for booting and testing. Application functions must be created and loaded by the system integrator.
Excitation cabinet for synchronous motors:
- Two power ratings are available as standard: Up to 1200 A or up to 1900 A excitation current.
- Active overvoltage protection by protective thyristor at load end. The excitation overvoltage energy is converted to heat in a resistor in the excitation cabinet.
- Optional line-side overvoltage limitation by active arresters (not possible with compact type of construction)
- Optional anti-condensation heating
- Optional cable decoupling for insulation monitoring via m.c.b. or > 500 V with coupling device.
- The ? 1200 A variant without options is also available in compact construction 600x600 mm (see order item code)
Parameterization of basic software:
Supported by the sophisticated, EXCEL-based para-meterization tool, it is possible to enter settings easily and save them for downloading and archiving. The tool also contains
the parameter description. Parameter upreads can also be copied to the table for comparison purposes. Every action is logged on the "History" tab with date and time.
The EXCEL list includes a VISUAL-BASIC program which can be used to generate user-specific parameter lists, to automatically create download macros for the IBS/Telemaster program
and to perform the automatic list match operation with upread macros. The program can run in Excel 97 and Excel 2000. Thanks to automatic logging of the download and upread macro
generation actions, the parameter list provides full documentation of the plant software state after commissioning.
